We are ALL more than our CV.
Take me, for example. I’m a marketing strategy professional. That’s what this blog is about. It’s what my LinkedIn profile speaks to, and what my experience shows. It’s a big part of my identity. I love what I do.
But I’m also so many other things. Just to name a few:
- I’m a travel nut who adores travelling, travel blogging, travel photography, and helping friends and family plan their travels. When I’m not backpacking to some new far-flung place, I’m also a travel community moderator and I’ve done travel-themed motivational speaking and networking.
- I’m a short (5’1″) woman who blogs about petite fashion, style, lifestyle, and advocacy.
- I’m a chocolate nerd. I love tasting craft bean-to-bar chocolate from all over the world, and connecting with other people who nerd out about chocolate.
- I’m an avid reader and book nerd, an amateur creative writer, and I’ve spent years as a volunteer editor for other aspiring writers.
- I’m a follower of politics. I was an early participant in the political blogosphere, and I’ve been writing and blogging about political issues for more than two decades.
- I’m a Jewish woman who is proud of my heritage, my culture, and my identity. I’m a vocal opponent of antisemitism as well as racism and discrimination in all of its forms.
- I’m a wife, a daughter, a family member and a friend. I have a community of people around me, and they are my everything. If you’ve been through a layoff, a career shift, or a long period of job searching, it might be difficult to remind yourself that you are so much more than your resume or your job description. We all are.If you’re trying to work out your next steps, try this useful exercise: Make a list of words that you identify with but have nothing to do with your job. I’m willing to bet there are a lot.I’m not sure who needed to hear this today. It may have simply been me who needed to say it. But I suspect I’m not alone.(Cartoon drawing by the amazing Jasmin Cheng, another woman of many talents. She drew this nearly 15 years ago, and I still love it. Thanks Jasmin!)
